Tips to Turn the Holidays into Your Weight Loss Friend

As the 2014 holiday season gets into full swing, anyone trying to manage their weight will probably approach it with mixed emotions.

Of course we all look forward to getting together with family and friends, going to company parties and finding just the right gifts. But for those who are watching their weight, each of those activities can be full of food temptations that could ruin their weight management program.

Every party and social gathering is full of sweet treats and drinks. It’s natural for anyone to want to indulge and enjoy the moment like everyone else. And when you’re in the midst of a shopping spree, it’s difficult to resist a quick meal at the food court.

But by following a few tips and shifting your attitude about the weight management threats that seem to be everywhere at this time of year, you can reduce the threat and get more enjoyment from the season.

  1. Look for Exercise Opportunities: You’ll probably be more active than usual over the next couple of weeks. It’s a great chance to burn off some of the extra calories. At the mall, park further away from the entrance and take the stairs. But also pay attention to your body for signs of over-exertion from too much walking or from carrying too much weight. If you feel joint or muscle pain, take a break or even head home and plan a shopping trip for later.

At parties, try to stand as much as possible or at least not sit in one spot for too long. Work the room to exchange greetings with as many people as you can. Think about the activity you’re getting and the calories you are burning. When the caroling starts, get into it and sing like no one’s listening.

And why not cut your own Christmas tree, it’s fun and a great excuse for getting outside into the fresh air.

  2. Eat Before You Go Out: Whether you’re off to shop or a family gathering, if you have a healthy meal or snack before you go, you won’t be as hungry – or tempted.
  3. Wear Good Shoes – Of course you want to look your best at a party, but when you’re shopping or getting a tree, make the right footwear choice. If you don’t, and you start walking the mall in four-inch heels, or traipsing around a tree farm in jogging shoes, you risk being uncomfortable or, even worse, hurting yourself. In either case, you’ll reduce the amount of exercise you get.
  4. Always Keep Your Weight Loss Goal in Mind: Sometimes we let our weight management program go just because it’s the holidays. Of course we all need a break from every routine, but try to always remember the overall goal. When you have no choice but to eat at the mall, look for healthier fast food options. At a party or dinner, look for the healthier choices of food and drink.

Every little bit you do to burn a few more calories, and eat a few less, will help you enjoy the holidays more and give you a jump on your New Year’s resolutions.
