6 Great Ways to Start Your Day

We have a confession to make. This post is barely a sentence old and we’ve sort of, well, lied to you already. This post really is about only one great way to start your day, but seven ways to do it.

Now that we’ve come clean, the great way to start your day, especially if you want watch your weight, want to make sure you’re getting good nutrition and and live a healthier lifestyle, is…

Eat a Healthy Breakfast

You’ve probably seen conflicting information about whether or not you should skip breakfast in the morning. Those who say ‘skip it’ point to a lack of scientific evidence to confirm the link between skipping breakfast and obesity, which shows itself statistically because obese people tend to skip breakfast.

The ‘eat breakfast’ camp not only points to the statistical evidence that skipping breakfast correlates with obesity, but also the link between skipping breakfast and eating more later on to compensate.

In our experience, it makes sense to give your body at least some nutrition in the morning considering that it has just gone at least eight hours without anything while you slept.

In the end, whatever makes sense for you and your experience and helps you better manage your weight is the way to go. If you happen to have later meals, and you don’t notice your weight increase after some time of skipping breakfast, then perhaps you can get away with it.

But for those of you who like to get the day started with healthy fuel for your body, here are just a few suggestions for making it a great start. These breakfast foods will make you feel fuller for longer, which will help you reduce what you eat throughout the day.

1. Quinoa

Whether you have a cup of quinoa porridge, or add some pistachios, almonds or fresh fruit to quinoa, you’ll get the benefit of its high protein and fibre, which metabolize slowly to keep you satisfied.

2. The Oatmeal Booster

First, oatmeal by itself is a great breakfast food considering how much fibre it delivers. But if you are among those who don’t always feel satisfied after a plain oatmeal breakfast, try pumping it up with nuts and/or nut butters.

3. Avocado on Toast

If you make an avocado spread the night before, this can also be one of your fastest breakfasts too. High in fibre and healthy fats, avocado on whole wheat toast also tastes great.

4. Eggs

There’s a reason that eggs have been a traditional breakfast food for centuries. They’re fast, versatile and, best of all, their high protein, good-fat content and filling satisfaction make them as good a way to start the day as any.

5. Nut Butters

If you haven’t noticed, but peanut butter has been joined on grocery store shelves by butters made from sesame seeds, hazelnuts and even coconuts. Like peanut butter, they are high in protein and fibre, low in sugar and salt and they taste great.

6. High-Pectin Fruits

Fresh fruits of any kind are a great food to eat first thing considering the energy and hydration you get, and generous doses of fibre too.  The pectin in some fruits also makes you feel even fuller because a layer of gelatin forms around the pectin after it enters your stomach, taking up space and chasing away the hunger pangs. Citrus fruits, apples, pears and guavas all have high levels of pectin.

Looking back at the list above, not only are these foods delicious ways to start the day, but they offer a wide variety of choices so breakfast will never be boring.
