Big Breakfast Benefits

It seems to make lots of sense. If you’re trying to lose weight, why not eat less by skipping a meal? And, because you’re usually too busy in the morning for breakfast anyway, why not just skip it.

The Unfortunate Result: Unable to resist the hunger pangs that come from skipping breakfast, you eat more later in the day. The total daily calorie intake for people who skip breakfast is often higher than for those who don’t skip a meal.

Make Time for a Good Breakfast

If you want to reduce the overall amount of food you eat during your regular meals, a recent study shows that it’s better to eat more at breakfast so you can reduce how much you eat later in the day.

According to the Globe and Mail, the authors of a 2013 study gave overweight women a 1,400-calorie diet for 12 weeks. The women were split into two groups. One group ate half their calories (700) at breakfast and then had a 500-calorie lunch and a 200-calorie dinner.

The second group did the opposite, consuming 200 calories at breakfast, 500 at lunch and 700 at dinner.

Compared to the second group, the big breakfast eaters lost over twice as much weight (19 lbs. versus 8 lbs.), reported fewer hunger pangs and had lower levels of appetite-stimulating, fat-storing hormones in their system.

The bigger breakfast/smaller dinner idea makes sense in other ways too. If you have a large dinner, you have less time to burn off the calories than you do following breakfast. Your body stores extra, unused calories as fat. Eating larger meals later in the day can promote fat storage and lead to weight gain.
