How to be a Better Cook Part One – The Right Tools

Most people realize that cooking their own meals is the best way to make sure they eat healthy foods.

So why are restaurants and fast food outlets more popular than ever?

Part of the reason is that our lifestyles are busier than ever too, which leaves less time to shop and cook. But very often, while we really want to cook more, we’re discouraged when we open the recipe book and find that we don’t have the right equipment or ingredients.

But setting yourself up to be the cook you always wanted to be is much easier than you think. And once you’re ready to go, you’ll spend much less time than you think preparing delicious, healthy meals.

The Right Kitchen Equipment

If you like to shop, you’re going to love this tip. Most people don’t have all the kitchen utensils, pots and pans they need for fast meal preparation.

  • Pots & Pans: To take advantage of a wider variety of quick, one-pot meals, you’ll need a frying pan, dutch oven, roasting pan, casserole dish, slow cooker, a saucepan, and, if you really want to get into it, a wok.
  • Knives: Have at least three good-quality knives, including a chef’s knife, a paring knife and a bread knife. And get a sharpener too.
  • Other utensils: When you start cooking more often, it’ll feel like you can’t have too many mixing bowls. You’ll also need two cutting boards, one for meat and fish, and one for vegetables. If you don’t have them already, measuring cups and spoons are essential and having two sets, for measuring wet and dry ingredients, will save you lots of time.

Having a spatula, tongs, garlic press, grater, colander, ladle and electric can opener at hand will round out your kitchen equipment and reduce the chances of needing to make an emergency visit to the housewares store.

Of course, there’s a seemingly endless array of handy utensils and gadgets for your kitchen, but the list above is a good start and you can add to it later as needed.
