How To Lose Weight By Not Focusing On Weight Loss

Do you know how to lose weight?

If you look at the numbers of people who do it, going on a weight-loss diet is the answer. In one online survey conducted in 2017, 42% of Canadian adults said they went on a diet in the past year with the specific intent of losing weight.

But, despite almost half of us going on weight loss diets, Statistics Canada says that over 60% of adult Canadians are overweight or obese.

So it looks like the weight-loss diet thing isn’t working for many people. And when you look at why it doesn’t work, you’ll wonder why anyone ever thought it could.

Why Weight Loss Diets Aren’t the Best Way to Lose Weight

Quite simply, the odds are stacked against all of us for successful weight loss from any weight loss diet.

  1. Your Body Isn’t Programmed for Weight Loss – Fortunately for you, your body is hell bent on keeping itself healthy. It sees sudden losses in body weight as a threat to your health and fights with everything it has against the weight loss.

  2. The Goals are Unsustainable – With your very own body working diligently against you, just meeting your target weight is difficult and staying there is an even bigger challenge.

  3. The Goals are Self-Defeating – Here’s the scenario so far. You’re trying to do something your body rejects. That makes it a real challenge to reach your weight loss goals. When your weight scale tells you that you didn’t get there yet. And you actually put on a couple of pounds. You feel defeated, discouraged and depressed. And you give up.

How to Lose Weight By Transforming Your Focus

Exclusively counting calories and pounds in an effort to see a magic number on a scale doesn’t work for one more reason in addition to the ones listed above. By using them to lose weight, you’re not really improving yourself. You may feel you are by getting to a healthier weight, but the reality is different.

Transform Your Focus to Become a Better You, not Just Lose Weight
It’s really interesting. If you google a variety of things that you can do to make a positive change in your life, from the overall “how to improve my health”, to more specific things like “how to make my skin look better” or “how to reduce stress”, you’ll see some striking similarities.

It may take a couple of clicks, but in each case you’ll eventually find the following advice for each self-improvement.

  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Eat more vegetables and fruit
  • Eat less refined sugar
  • Get more exercise
  • Get a good night’s sleep

Oh, and there’s one more google search in which you’ll find the same advice: “how to healthily lose weight and keep it off”. Go ahead, try it.
