Looking for Weight Loss Advice? Ask Zach Galifianakis

While he’s an accomplished actor, comedian and philanthropist, Zach Galifianakis is best known as the awkward, inept – and chunky – Alan Garner in “The Hangover” movie trilogy.

There’s no denying that a major part of the ‘Garner’ character is Galfianakis’ extra weight. If Galifianakis had either Bradley Cooper or Ed Helms’ (the other lead actors in the films) trimmer body type, he’d have a more difficult time getting the laughs and generating the sympathy.

If you’re trying to manage your weight, imagine how difficult it would be if you happened to make millions of dollars, and enjoyed worldwide fame, partly because of your girth?

But none of that stopped Galifianakis from shedding 50 pounds since 2013. While he first sported his new, slimmer physique last October at the premiere of his latest film “Birdman”, it wasn’t until he accepted an award for the film this past weekend that he revealed the complete transformation.

In addition to the disappearance of the extra weight, gone too were the trademark beard and long hair.

The Right Motivation Helps Improve Weight Loss

So how did Galifianakis manage to lose so much weight, keep it off so far, and change his appearance so much as to be almost unrecognizeable?

In a way, Galifianakis was lucky. He had a major motivational factor. And it had nothing to do with his weight.

“I stopped drinking and I just kind of put the weight off…I was having a lot of vodka with sausage…delicious but bad for you,” Galifianakis told Conan O’Brien. “I was getting into too much trouble with the drinking, so I just kind of stopped.”

Even if your diet is healthy and balanced, alcohol, especially excessive quantities, drains nutrients from your body and encourages poor eating habits, like fatty sausage, while under the influence.

By eliminating the booze and bad eating, Galifianakis created an environment where his body was able to get the nutrition it needed to help him lose a large amount of weight and keep it off.
