Nutrition & Weight Loss Part 1: 3 Major Consequences of Not Getting Proper Nutrition

When you’re trying to lose or better manage your weight, if you don’t give your body the right nutrition, you will suffer consequences:

  1. More Difficulty Losing Weight – Your body is programmed for self-preservation. When it doesn’t get the right nutrition, it slows itself down and burns fewer calories. Even if you’re on a calorie-reduced diet, you still might gain weight because your body is burning fewer calories due to poor nutrition.
  2. Psychological Problems – Your body’s drive to preserve itself means it absolutely craves proper nutrition. When you eat foods that are low in nutrients, your body tells you to eat more so it can get the nutrition it needs. This can lead to overeating and obesity, which in turn leads to anxiety about weight gain, depression about not being able to achieve or sustain your goals, and the low self-esteem that results.
  3. Disease and Physical Problems – Diabetes, cancer and heart disease can all result and be made worse by consuming foods that are high in fats and sugars and low in nutrition. On a low-nutrition diet, your body will take longer to recover from illness and injury, including infections, broken bones and soft-tissue injuries.

Clearly, good nutrition is very important for your physical and mental well being, especially when dealing with the stress of a weight loss program. The more you learn about nutrition, the more you will appreciate its importance and how to use it to achieve the weight levels you want.

To help you learn more, we’ll be writing a series of blog posts that explore the relationship between nutrition and weight loss.

This is the first post in the series and, to start at the beginning, here are a couple of quick definitions:

Nutrients are the chemical elements that your body needs to function, grow and stay alive. Nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins and minerals. Our bodies produce many of the nutrients we need. For example, most people get all the vitamin D they require from exposure to the sun. Other nutrients, usually called essential nutrients, must be obtained from what we eat and drink because our bodies don’t produce enough of them, or don’t produce them at all.

Nutrition is the process of getting the right nutrients to where they are needed in the body. Good nutrition comes from eating the right foods. During weight loss and weight management programs, a restricted diet means it is often difficult to give your body the nutrition it needs. And we discovered the consequences of that a few paragraphs ago!
Nutritional supplements, and a supplement plan developed specifically for your body type and requirements by a nutritional professional, will ensure your body always gets the nutrition it craves. So you won’t suffer the consequences.
