Your Mid-Winter Healthy Snacking Guide

Ok. That’s it. The holidays are over. It’s time for full-on hibernation mode. Except, while the animals in the woods eat a lot of food before hibernating, human hibernation can mean going on a Netflix binge while huddled under blankets with a big bowl of cheesies.

Hibernation also means you’re probably less active. The combination of increased time in front of the TV, computer or Instagram, and simply not getting outside as much, delivers a double whammy to your weight loss program. And you might not notice – until the consequences show up on the weight scale.

While you should try to get outside as often as you can at any time of year, we can’t control that. But we can give you some suggestions for healthy snacks!

3 Healthy Snacks for Mid-Winter Hibernation

One of the quickest ways to make all your snacks healthier is to get no-salt versions of things like peanuts. And here are some other snack ideas to get your thought the winter.

  1. All-Dressed Chickpeas – Chickpeas are so versatile. You can make up your own version to taste. You can heat them in the microwave, roast them in the oven, or have them straight out of the can. Try adding olive oil, ground cumin, garlic powder, chilli powder and/or black pepper to pump up the flavour.

  2. Avocado Toast – This one’s so popular that people are writing love letters to avocado toast. We mention it here because, considering its base of wholewheat toast and avocado topping, it’s a warm, satisfying and healthy snack even before you customize it with things like cherry tomatoes, lemon juice, basil leaves and egg slices.

  3. Make Your Own Fruit-Bottom Yogurt – Among its many benefits, yogurt is high in protein, calcium and probiotics for a healthy gut. But it can also be high in sugar and fat, especially the more flavourful “fruit-bottom” varieties. You can get all the good stuff and avoid all the bad stuff by going with low-fat Greek yogurt, and the fresh fruit of your choice, including raspberries, blueberries and/or grapes.
