The 5 Biggest Weight Loss Lies You Tell Yourself

It’s not like we set out to deceive ourselves. It has more to do without our fear of change and failure. But whatever the cause, there are a number of things we tell ourselves about weight loss that are simply not true. And many of them can cause us to never try to eat healthier foods, or to abandon our weight management program at the first sign of trouble.

Have you ever told yourself any of these “lies” about you’re your weight loss?

1. Healthy Food is too Expensive

No, it isn’t. Yes, the price of some healthier foods, including organically grown produce and lean meats, can be higher than their regular counterparts, but they deliver far more nutrition.

2. Healthy Food Tastes Bad

No, it doesn’t. You’re just not used to the flavours and you’re letting that hurdle get in the way of a healthier weight and lifestyle. Once you get used to the taste good food, your old choices will taste just as bad as healthy food does now.

3. My Clothes Shrunk in the Wash

Really? Hop on the weigh scale. It doesn’t lie.

4. I Did Some Exercising Today, So I Can Eat Anything

This is a big lie for two reasons. First, most of us underestimate how many calories are in many of the foods we eat. Second, most of us overestimate how many calories we burn during exercise. Put them together and this lie can be devastating to your weight loss efforts.

Want an example? A Subway 6” Double Roast Beef Sub, a Veggie Delite Salad with fat-free Italian dressing, and a medium iced tea sounds like a relatively healthy fast-food choice. It’s a half-sized sub, you’re using fat-free dressing on your salad and the drink has less sugar than a Coke.

You would need to jog for an hour to burn off the calories (455) in that meal. Did you exercise that much today?

5. My Parents are Fat, So I Can’t do Anything About My Extra Weight

Yes, you can. While your body style is genetic, for the most part, your extra weight is not. Overweight parents pass along poor eating habits more than poor genes.

The biggest hurdles to living a healthier lifestyle are those that stop us from starting or that force us off the path. But when we look at them for what they really are; excuses to avoid change or failure, they become the easiest challenges to conquer.
