Why Stress Makes it Harder to Lose Weight

You’ve finally done it. You decided to get serious about weight loss; you’re eating healthier foods, getting good nutrition and trying to add a little more physical activity to your day. Well done.

If you’re like most, despite the difficulties, it’s probably a little easier than you think. While you’ve had to make tough decisions and adjustments, you enjoy seeing and feeling the improvements in your health and weight levels.

But then your car breaks down and it’s going to cost a mini-vacation to get it fixed. And a person at work is making things difficult. And your dog tears up the neighbour’s garden – again.

Suddenly, staying on track with your new healthy eating habits seems like the most difficult thing in the world.

What is it About Stress that Makes Losing Weight Even More Difficult?

There are more than a few obstacles between you and your target weight. But they are known and you can plan to overcome them. Stress usually pops up unexpectedly and throws two more hurdles in your path:

Stress on Top of Stress

Even if you enjoy it and it’s been successful, your weight loss program is a source of stress. Adjusting to new foods, preparing more of your own meals and counting calories all add to your daily responsibilities. When other stressful life-events come along, sometimes you just want a little relief from the grind. When you can’t do too much about the major source of stress, you look for some other release, and falling back into your easy, comfortable old eating habits provides it.

Stress Changes Your Brain

A University of Zurich study found that stress changes your brain chemistry to make you crave high-energy food. Stress increases brain functioning, which increases its demand for its favourite source of energy: glucose. Yes, the same glucose that’s packed into chocolate chip cookies, fizzy soft drinks and your favourite cake.

There are two ways to not let stress ruin your weight loss journey.

First, have a plan. If you have a calendar of your meals and plan them out in advance, you are less likely to break from it than if your meal planning is day-to-day.
Second, get some guidance and advice. Like any of life’s other issues, it helps to have someone to talk to who knows what you’re going through and who can offer helpful, reliable advice and words of encouragement.
