One Day is Today

You’ll start eating healthier foods one day. You’ll get more active one day. One day, you’ll really make an effort to lose weight.

But not today. Today you woke up late. Or you had a rough day at work today. Or today you feel too good to make any changes.

Stop Making Excuses

The problem with saying “one day I will…(fill in the goal that you’ll never begin)” is that it puts one day into the same category as “tomorrow”.

And tomorrow never comes.

What if, instead of putting it into the future, you made “one day” mean today? What if, instead of always planning to manage your weight, you decided to do something about it today? What if, instead of looking for excuses to not begin, you looked for ways to start reaching your goals today.

Tips to Start Living Healthier Today

Below are a few suggestions to help you get started down the road to better health and successful weight management. Remember, before you begin any serious change in diet or activity levels, you should talk to your doctor or a nutritional consultant.

  • Reduce Sugary Drinks – They are addictive, but getting rid of them is one of the easiest ways to lose weight. If all you did to lose weight was to replace one can of Coke with water every day, you would lose about a pound every month.

While Coca Cola has a bad reputation for packing lots of sugar into every can, it isn’t the worst culprit. Many drinks that you might not suspect of being sugar-laden actually contain more sugar than Coke, including Monster energy drink, Minute Maid Lemonade, Snapple Apple Drink and Barq’s Root Beer.

  • Commit to Adding Some Small Physical Activity to Your Day – Whether it’s taking a walk around your house, standing during television commercials or using a flight of stairs, they can all help you lose weight over time. None of these activities alone will shed lots of pounds. But if you simply get over the hurdle of putting a little more movement into your day, it becomes easier to make it part of your life and work up to activity levels that will produce visible results.
  • Designate One Day a Week as “Healthy Day” – It’s like the reverse of the “Cheat Day” that many diets include to help keep you on track. Pick a day each week where you will eat nothing but healthy, nutritious meals, get a little exercise and avoid fatty, high-sugar and high-salt snacks.

There’s a reason you make excuses to not start living a healthier life. It’s not easy and doing so usually means making a big commitment and lots of changes. But if the thought of larger adjustments to your life discourages you from starting, then try making small adjustments, like those above, just so you begin. Very often, once people take the first steps to a healthier lifestyle, even small ones, they never look back.

And they wonder why they wasted so much time making excuses.
